Earth Day underwater cleanup

Volunteers from the Tacoma Scuba Community are joining forces to save the environment for Earth Day. The cleanup will be held at Point Defiance Boathouse in Tacoma. 810 pounds of trash were removed from the waterways last year. This cleanup continues to help marine life and conserve the environment. Participating in the cleanup is a great way for you to promote your business, and also allows you to meet people who love scuba diving.

The organizers are hoping to get kayakers as well as scuba divers working together to clean up the Tacoma waterfront. After the net has been removed, divers will transport it from the water with a boat lift. Wounded Warriors may be able to assist with large quantities of trash removal. The organizers hope the cleanup will preserve our waterways and offer a unique experience for the local community.

Rockfish survey

Scuba divers can save endangered rockfish species by taking part in a Tacoma SCUBA rockfish survey. This dive is part a citizen science collaboration between Harbor WildWatch and the NOAA. Divers of all levels are welcome to participate in the survey. There is no need for survey experience. The dive brief is the training. Night diving is permitted for those who are certified.

In 1998, WDFW began a multiyear study on mark-recapture near Westport in Washington. The monitoring system of sport fishery tag-recovery monitoring involves five annual releases. These fish were released in pinnacles of the Westport charter boat fishing fleet. To determine the individual identity of each fish, two wire tags were attached to the opercular musculature.

Easy exit with only a few pounds trash

You can go scuba diving near Commencement Bay if you are looking for a spot in the Greater Tacoma area. Volunteer scuba divers brought up 47 pounds of garbage from the water this Earth Day. Octopuses, fishing net, and glass bottles made up the majority of the garbage. The Marine Science and Technology Center of Highline Community College (MaST) organized the clean-up. The waters around Des Moines were cleaned up by the MaST in a previous cleanup.

Observation of the wounded bull sea lion

Tacoma dive group, Washington had the honor of seeing an amazing sight while they were scuba diving. A bull sea lion was shot by an arrow and stunned divers. The injured animal was reportedly blind and had a scar from a shark bite. Bjorn, who was blind from the shark bite, was taken to Los Angeles' Marine Mammal Care Center where rescuers assisted him in gaining weight. Bjorn is now the name of the sea-lion after a character from the TV series "Vikings." This mighty creature, which now weighs almost 400 pounds, lives at the Tacoma Point Defiance Zoo & Aquarium.

A Tacoma dive group experienced this spectacular sight in October. It was the first time that the group had ever seen a sea lion on a dive, and they were so excited about it that they gathered in groups with other scuba divers to watch the creatures in action. Observations of the sea lions reveal their playful nature. The sea lion pups will often play in the water with divers and form groups of like-aged friends. The pups like to play with divers as well, jumping into the sea to give them toys or interact with bubble streams.
