How to Become a Dive Master

Dive masters are professionals who help others go underwater. They lead organized and recreational dives. In many countries, the dive master qualification is the required level for divers with supervisory or guide responsibility. Not everyone can become a dive master. You can still become a divemaster if you have the right qualifications. Here are some of your benefits as a dive master.

The job description of a dive master includes a range of duties including supervision of customer dives, assessment of the risks, briefings, and leading dive groups. A job description for a divemaster can be more diverse. A dive master may be responsible for several different aspects of a dive shop, including the general operation and social media presence.

Scuba instructors can teach and supervise divers in open water and swimming pools. They also supervise other activities like navigation exercises. Open water dive instructors can lead students on the surface and navigation portions of the dives. Dive instructors may also be responsible for directing certified divers through scuba review courses. The legal responsibility of dive instructors varies from country to country. A waiver can be signed by a dive instructor to exempt them from legal liability in certain countries.

Certification requirements

You will need to complete a course if you want to become a divemaster. Divemaster courses cover topics like managing divers, managing dive sites and finding the flow. Additionally, candidates must have at least 60 logged dives. Divemasters are able to assist new divers in their theory and skills through teaching them.


In addition to taking courses, Dive masters must pass a two-part examination. Candidates must score at minimum 75% in each section to pass the exam. The PADI Instructor Guide and the eRDPML will be used to prepare for the exam. Students also need to prepare an emergency assistance plan and complete five waterskills exercises. The combined scores should not be less than fifteen. The course must be completed before certification can be granted to divemasters.

Internship requirements

There are various internship options to become a Divemaster. You have the option to help set up dive sites or assist with other PADI courses, depending on what you prefer. Your assistance may be needed for skill circuits. An internship will have a defined pattern. An average internship lasts eight weeks. During this period, you may be able to become an Advanced Open Water Diver. After four to six weeks of training, you will be able to become a Divemaster or Diveguide.

Additionally to the paid internships you might be eligible for a free internship as a Divemaster. Although internships are not always the best, it will give you plenty of time to learn and receive advice from Divemasters. Additionally, you may be able to receive the necessary manuals, certification, and equipment as part of your internship. Be aware of all requirements before you sign up for any Divemaster course.
