Earth Day underwater cleanup

Volunteers from the Tacoma Scuba Community are joining forces to save the environment for Earth Day. The cleanup takes places at the Point Defiance Boathouse near Tacoma. 810 pounds of trash were removed from the waterways last year. This is an ongoing effort that protects marine life and preserves the environment. Getting involved is a great way to promote your business and meet other people who enjoy scuba.

The organizers are hoping to get kayakers as well as scuba divers working together to clean up the Tacoma waterfront. Once the net is removed, divers will use a boat elevator to haul it out of the water. Wounded Warriors may be able to assist with large quantities of trash removal. The organizers hope the cleanup will preserve our waterways and offer a unique experience for the local community.

Rockfish survey

Scuba divers can participate in a Tacoma SCUBA-based rockfish survey to help save endangered species. This dive is part of the Harbor WildWatch citizen science collaboration with the NOAA. Divers of all levels are welcome to participate in the survey. There is no need for survey experience. The dive brief is where the training takes place. However, the participant should be certified to participate in night dives.

In 1998, WDFW started a multiyear mark-recapture program near Westport, Washington. This project involves a five-year annual release of black rockfish as part of a sport fishing tag-recovery system. These fish were released from pinnacles that were fished by Westport charter fishing boats. The survey involves the placement of two coded wire tags within the opercular musculature of these fish to determine individual identification after recapture.

Easy exit with pounds of trash

If you're looking for a place to go scuba diving in the greater Tacoma area, consider the waters near Commencement Bay. Earth Day was celebrated by 47 pounds of trash collected by volunteer scuba divers. Octopuses, fishing wire, and glass bottles were all part of the garbage. Marine Science and Technology Center MaST, part Highline Community College, organized this clean-up. A previous MaST cleanup removed hundreds of pounds of trash from the waters around Des Moines.

Observation on wounded bull sea-lion

Tacoma, Washington dive group had the opportunity to witness an amazing sight while scuba diving. The sight of a bull sealion injured by an arrow stunned divers. According to reports, the shark bite had left the animal blind and had left a scar. Bjorn was rescued and taken to the Marine Mammal Care Center Los Angeles. The sea lion is now named Bjorn, after a character in the popular TV show "Vikings." This mighty creature, which now weighs almost 400 pounds, lives at the Tacoma Point Defiance Zoo & Aquarium.

A Tacoma dive group experienced this spectacular sight in October. It was the first time that the group had ever seen a sea lion on a dive, and they were so excited about it that they gathered in groups with other scuba divers to watch the creatures in action. Observations reveal the playful nature and energy of the lions. The sea lion pups will often play in the water with divers and form groups of like-aged friends. They also enjoy playing with divers, jumping in the water and giving them toys as well as interacting with bubble stream.
